A speakeasy sparks a conversation in fundraising methods between the West and ongoing tragedies of war in developing nations.
A speakeasy sparks a conversation in fundraising methods between the West and ongoing tragedies of war in developing nations.
Using grief as a catalyst, we initiate discussions about privilege and desensitization. The speakeasy challenges the boundaries of empathy by exploring grief for non-loved ones and prompting self-reflection on personal privilege. Through Suspension of Disbelief and Thought Experiments, we foster critiques of Western desensitization to death and grief.

This was used as a entry ticket to our speakeasy. If the individual does not have a coin, they would need to say the correct code, which is “thoughts and prayers.”

We blocked out the outside light by plastering social media posts, news articles, and other examples of desensitization to war along the entrance wall and door window, creating a visual barrier that confronts visitors with these realities.

DRINK MENU
Each drink included an ingredient from the listed countries. All the drinks’ prices are based on one set ratio to show the price differences and impacts on the issues. The caption states the price’s increase based on the number of deaths and the percentage that goes towards fundraising.

This project gives me the chance to really “go big or go home.” The team and I worked together to produce projects every week to get out of our comfortable zone of design. We wanted to use the uncomfortable feeling about the topic of death and grief out into a conversation. This was the coolest projects I got to do, especially since we got to transform the classroom into our version of speakeasy.
